Beauty contestant accused of wounding

A former Miss World contestant has appeared in court accused of attacking another woman with a bottle.

Beauty queen Sophie Williams, 19, won the Miss Wales contest in 2000 under her maiden name of Cahill.

She is charged with wounding with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm and an alternative charge of wounding.

She is alleged to have launched the attack on November 13 last year.

Williams spoke only to confirm her name during the five minute hearing at Newport Crown Court, where she appeared wearing an ankle-length black coat, black trousers and top.

The defendant, of Wyeverne Road, Beachley, Chepstow, flew to the Maldives to take part in the Miss World contest after being crowned Miss Wales.

Judge David Morris released her on unconditional bail to appear for a plea and directions hearing on January 16.
